About Ranks

Although there are sims in the SLA which do not use a rank system, most of our games do have some ranking structure. Ranks are used to reward simmers for activity, time spent with the sim, responsibility, and many other things. It's important to note, though, that rank is not everything.

The SLA itself tries to avoid emphasizing ranks as much as possible, because we know that at the end of the day, simming is about telling and living stories, not about placing some members "higher" than others in any sort of pecking order. Members of the SLA Government aren't made "admirals," and everyone's opinion is valued.

This isn't to say that ranks are not important. When you are promoted, it is one of the highest compliments a host can pay you. It means, "You're doing a great job, thank you for helping to make the sim enjoyable for everyone." Ranks don't mean, however, that anyone is more important than anyone else. Don't put too much faith in ranks!

Some people join sims in order to rise up through the ranks, and some people join sims to tell stories; both are valid reasons for simming, and both are definitely enjoyable if that is your aim. Just remember that ranks are about fun, not about superiority or about insults. Sims require everyone's effort to survive and thrive, from the newest member to the ancient crewmember who has been around for years. Your contributions and your fun are very important!
